How many online gambling sites are there?

According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), there are roughly 3,000 online gambling sites that offer some variant of sports betting, poker, online casino, bingo, and/or other internet games played for real money.

Can you gamble online legally?

Yes, you can gamble online legally in select states in the US (Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia), provided the gambling site you use holds the necessary licenses to operate in accordance with state law(s).

How do I start gambling online?

To start gambling online in the US, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Check your state permits online gambling
  2. Choose a gambling site most suited to you
  3. Create an online gambling account
  4. Make a deposit
  5. Claim your welcome bonus

How do I know if a gambling site is legit?

There are a few ways to determine the legitimacy of an online gambling site.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the website to find the seal of the state’s regulatory body. For example, at , the seal for NJDGE (New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement) is clearly presented. The image is also clickable, enabling the user to see a list of all authorized sites in the state.
  2. A quick look at the payment options available is usually an instant way of finding out whether the site is legit. Regulated gambling site offers a range of the most popular payment methods for Americans, i.e VISA/MasterCard, PayPal, eCheck, Online bank transfer, PayNearMe, and ACH. If the gambling site in question offers just one or two, one of which is Bitcoin, it isn’t likely to be a legitimate option for US players and bettors.
  3. Read reviews of online gambling sites to get an expert’s opinion of the site in question. This is a great way to get an overview of what the site can offer you from the perspective of somebody who has tried and tested the site themselves.

With over 30+ years of industry experience, we appreciate that everyone has different preferences when it comes to choosing a gambling site or app. Finding exactly what you’re looking for can take time and some rooting around.

To help get around this we evaluate each operator across specific criteria including welcome bonus, mobile experience, variety of bets/games, payment options, customer support, as well as promotions, unique features, and user experience.

Based on this, these are the best gambling sites available in the US we recommend right now.

At first glance, every gambling site can appear to look the same. Each has a bonus or promo as a welcome gift, displays odds or games, and provides you with a shiny platform to do your wagering online.

However, when you dig a bit deeper, it’s clear that each sportsbook or casino is unique and offers something different.

In order to show you this, we’ve evaluated every single US gambling website based on the following: bonus offer, variety of bets and/or games, mobile experience, payment options, and customer support.

These are the five main categories, and also, the types of questions we consider when evaluating US gambling sites.

  1. Bonus Offer – Does the sign-up bonus or promo offer you value? What are the wagering requirements and conditions? Is it competitive with other gambling companies?
  2. Variety of Games/Bets – Is there a range of sports to bet on or games to play? How many variations of your favorite table game are there?
  3. Mobile Experience – Is the gambling app highly responsive and reliable? Can you play casino games without any hitches?
  4. Payment Options – How many ways can you deposit and withdraw? Is PayPal accepted? What are processing times like for depositing and withdrawing?
  5. Support – How can you contact the customer service team? Are they helpful and responsive? Is there onsite help such as FAQS and help centers? Does the gambling company encourage and promote responsible gambling?

This method of ranking gambling sites has enabled us to produce the recommendations, lists and reviews seen across the website.

Online gambling websites use Sign Up Bonuses, or Welcome Promos as they are also called, to entice you to sign-up. Such bonuses are the best way for online casinos and online betting sites to stand out and ‘win’ your business, so to speak.

You will find a number of different types of gambling bonuses in the USA, the following being the most common.

Types of Online Gambling Sign Up Bonus

  • Match Deposit Bonus – The most common type of gambling bonus where your initial deposit will be matched, up to a certain percentage. For example, the match bonus is 100% up to $1000. If you deposit $1000, the operator will match that with $1000.
  • Risk-Free Bets – Often called a bet insurance, this type of bonus ensures you have a free bet to use, should your first wager lose. The free bet will be up to a certain percentage, for example, a risk-free bet up to $500.
  • Free Cash (No Deposit Bonus) – A no deposit bonus is a small sum – normally between $10 and $20 – given to you for completing the registration process and creating an account.

Variety is the spice of life as they say and we believe it is an essential ingredient for every online gambling site worth its time.

For online casino sites we consider the entire game selection and the exact number of table games, online slots and live dealer games to make sure there are a wide choice of options.

In terms of sports betting, the list of sports available is key and, within that, how many different types of leagues and competitions you can wager on. Even more significant though is the number of betting markets for each sport.

Let’s take a look at which gambling sites offer the best variety across sports betting and casino gambling.

Rewind ten years or so and it’s hard to imagine anything that could top your laptop or desktop computer for playing online casino games or gambling on sports.

However, advancements in technology and the increased use of smartphones have completely changed the way we gamble online.

Today, whether you’re betting on sports or playing your favorite casino games, chances are you’re going to do so using a mobile gambling app.

When comparing and rating gambling apps, navigationspeed, and availability are the three fundamentals we consider. Without the basic principles mentioned, the app is almost certainly not worth your time.

I mean, you could have an app with all the best casino games imaginable. However, if the lack of clear navigation makes it hard to find your favorites, and games are slow to load, it doesn’t matter how many games they offer. That’s why we look at the many different aspects of a gambling app when we compare and rank them.

Key Features of Online Gambling Apps

  • Navigation – Good navigation makes for a pleasant user experience
  • Speed – A fast processing app means games and bets load quickly
  • Availability – The app is downloadable and will work on your device

The payment methods available are a determining factor for many players when comparing gambling sites.

The availability of online and offline methods, the processing times of deposits and withdrawals and the fees some options can incur are all points to consider here (which you can view by reading our reviews of each US gambling site by the way).

For many bettors however, finding a gambling site that accepts PayPal is a critical factor and therefore one we have explored in more detail for you.

We’ll wager that, at least once in your life, you’ve used PayPal to make an online payment. And why’s that? Because it is a fast, trusted, and very convenient way of moving money.

PayPal uses end-to-end encryption to help keep your data and transactions secure and being an e-wallet, allows you to keep your betting and banking accounts separate.

Finding the best gambling sites with PayPal is a priority for many US bettors and casino players. Below, we recommend the top options.

Best PayPal Gambling Sites

  1. Bet365 – Deposits & Withdrawals
  2. Caesars – Deposits & Withdrawals
  3. FanDuel – Deposits & Withdrawals
  4. Unibet – Deposits & Withdrawals
  5. BetMGM – Deposits & Withdrawals

Last, but by no means least, we consider the level of customer support offered by each gambling site.

Whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned pro there comes a time when everyone needs help to fix a problem of some sort.

The best gambling sites ensure there are a variety of easy-to-find customer support methods including live chat, email, social media support and FAQs to help customers around the clock. Not only that, their teams are fast to respond and deal with issues efficiently.

Having taken each site and tested the support options for ourselves, we were able to recommend the following gambling companies.

Best Gambling Sites for Customer Support

  1. Unibet – 24/7 Support Custom to each state
  2. Caesars – Live Chat, Email, Phone
  3. Bet365 – Live Chat, Email, Phone
  4. PointsBet – 24/7 Live Chat, Email
  5. BetRivers – Live Chat, Email

In the US, online gambling laws are decided state-by-state. Each has its own gambling board which creates the regulatory framework for operators to work within.

Because of this the rules for gambling varies between states and the online gambling type permitted is also different – only a handful of states have full online gambling (sports betting, casino and poker) for example.

Ultimately, no two states have the same gambling websites available. With this in mind, we’ve broken down the list of gambling sites according to the states they’re legal in.

The Garden State has by far the biggest market for legal gambling in the US and is home to the most options, which is not surprising considering NJ casino and poker sites have existed since 2013.

Casino options include Golden Nugget Casino, 888casino, and BetMGM Casino. FanDuel Casino, however, remains the most popular with its super selection of slots and exclusive live dealer games, which remains the number one choice for New Jersey players.

As for the highly competitive NJ sports betting market, PointsBet, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and BetMGM are the major online sportsbooks.

You will also find a robust list of gambling sites in PA where sports betting and casinos have been allowed since 2019. Pennsylvania is one of the largest markets for online gambling in the US, in fact.

BetMGM Casino, FanDuel Casino, and Caesars Casino are popular casino picks, while Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, and FanDuel Sportsbook are favored by sports bettors.

Michigan joined a select number of states with a full set of online gambling options in January 2021, launching sports betting and online casinos at the same time. Online poker, the Michigan Lottery, and Daily Fantasy Sports are also legal forms of gambling in MI.

There are over 20 regulated online gambling sites in Michigan with FanDuel Casino, BetMGM, and Caesars Casino leading the casino market and DraftKings Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet the popular sports betting options.

WV may be one of the smaller states but the options for gambling online are plenty with sports betting, casino, online lottery, and daily fantasy sports available.

Even though the number of WV gambling sites is on the low side, locals have a number of the biggest operators like DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, and PointsBet to use.

There are a number of different online gambling types in America.

Sports Betting, Casino Games, Poker, Slots, Horse Racing, Lotteries and Bingo all come under the umbrella of online gambling in the US.

In this guide we focus on the two most popular types of gambling online in the states right now: online casino and online sports betting.

Online Casinos USA

As the focus shifts from sports betting, more and more states will naturally look to expand gambling regulations to include online casinos in the near future.

Currently, only in New JerseyPennsylvaniaWest Virginia, Michigan and Connecticut can you play online casinos, legally. New York, Indiana, and Iowa could also allow for online casinos sometime in 2023.

As with online betting, New Jersey led the way and became home to the first regulated market for online casino games in the US back in 2013. To this day, The Garden State is considered the largest regulated gambling market in the US.

Online Sports Betting USA

Multiple states including New Jersey, PennsylvaniaIndianaNew YorkMichigan and Colorado have all enacted legal sports wagering bills and authorized the rollout of sports betting sites since 2018.

Prior to that sports betting (never mind online sports betting) was banned in the US, except for in Nevada and a select number of states – Delaware, Oregon, and Montana – where limited sports betting existed.

This all changed on May 14, 2018, however, when the long-standing ban, aka the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), was abolished, thanks to a legal challenge by the state of New Jersey.

Here is a full list of states where you can gamble online in the US.

By ‘gamble online’, we mean states where you can legally do (at least) one of the following: play online casino games, bet on sports online, or play poker online.

  • Pennsylvania – There is a full house of legal gambling options in The Keystone State with online sports betting, online casinos, and online poker all available.
